I understand access to higher education and knowledge as a justice issue, and therefore I am committed to challenging traditional ideas about what higher education courses look and feel like. Simply providing access to content through lecture is not enough; I work to be flexible, responsive, and critically engaged in order to ask undergraduate and graduate students (particularly those who are preparing to be teachers) to reflect on and question their own knowledge, and to challenge the way that things are. My courses,
both online and in person, have involved student-led dialogue and activities (collaborative case studies, group quizzes, group discussion boards) and art pedagogy (creative summative projects, art assignment activities). In both online and face to face settings I utilize first-person perspectives of people with disabilities, including my own, throughout. This practice grounds the theoretical and practical work of education in lived experiences and knowledge about disability that students may not otherwise encounter prior to entering a classroom for the first time.
